Story Tables Hillegom – Library Conversations

Story Tables Hillegom – Weekly Conversations at the Library

Hillegom’s community spirit truly comes alive at the Story Tables, a series of free weekly gatherings hosted at the Hillegom Library. Every Monday afternoon, participants share memories, listen to stories, and enjoy conversations on themes ranging from school days to nightlife and the famous bulb industry. Because journalist Veronica Handgraaf guides the discussions, the sessions feel both engaging and inclusive. Consequently, locals, newcomers, and visitors all find a welcoming place to connect.

What Are the Story Tables?

The Story Tables in Hillegom are informal meetups designed to spark conversation around cultural heritage. Each week, participants exchange personal stories based on a specific theme. As a result, the sessions not only preserve Hillegom’s history but also create new connections between generations. Moreover, the relaxed atmosphere is enhanced by complimentary coffee, tea, and local treats provided by Stichting Vrienden van Oud Hillegom, the foundation dedicated to safeguarding the town’s past.

Schedule and Location

When and Where

The Story Tables run for ten consecutive weeks starting Monday, 11 September 2025. Sessions take place every Monday afternoon from 14:00 to 15:30 at Bibliotheek Hillegom, Sportlaan 1, 2182 KS Hillegom. Because admission is free and registration is not required, you can simply drop in and join the conversation. Arriving on time ensures you won’t miss the start of the storytelling.

How to Participate

You are welcome to listen quietly or share your own memories—both options are equally valued. On the one hand, longtime residents enjoy revisiting the past. On the other hand, newcomers and visitors gain insight into Hillegom’s unique culture. Therefore, each session feels like a true exchange of perspectives.

Nightlife in Historic Hillegom

Next, participants share stories of cafés, music venues, and local nightlife that shaped the town’s social fabric over the years.

The Bulb Industry and Work Life

Hillegom’s central role in the flower bulb trade takes the spotlight as residents recall their experiences in the fields and related industries.

Healthcare and Community Associations

Later sessions focus on the evolution of healthcare and the many local associations that continue to strengthen community wellbeing.

Part of Cultureel Najaar Hillegom

The Story Tables are also a highlight of Cultureel Najaar Hillegom, the cultural autumn festival running from 2 September to 18 November 2025. Since this festival embraces the motto “everyone can join,” the Story Tables perfectly reflect its mission. Consequently, they not only enrich the festival program but also invite the wider community to participate actively in cultural heritage.

Enjoy Coffee, Treats, and Good Company

Every session includes coffee, tea, and local delicacies, which add to the cozy, relaxed setting. As a result, conversations flow more easily, and the gatherings feel less like formal events and more like friendly afternoons spent together.
